regular vs. premium tractor hydraulic fluid

I have an older excavator and crawler-loader. The same tractor hydraulic fluid will meet the JD20C and IH Hytran specs for each machine. Premium fluid is $10-15 more per 5 gal bucket. Both machines are used on the farm and operated about 100 hours per year. Is premium fluid worth the additional cost?

Jack the one biggest thing I see in the older equipment is on COLD weather starts the premium fluid seems to flow better or quicker. I allways tell folks if they are one to start and use the equipment a lot in the winter might be worth the difference other wise just the cheaper. Just my 2 cents worth and that is about all it is worth. This oil thing is discussed on here a lot and you can get any answer you want.. Have a good day

I didn't know there was a "premium" fluid. I buy my oil by the barrel from a distributor. It meets or exceeds all the spec's for trans/hyd fluid. It gets used in almost everything on the farm, including a TLB, and dozer.

A friend thats an engineer for a heavy equipment manufacturer told me that in some instances the more expensive fluid is well worth the added cost. Not so much for hydraulics, but for some transmissions, and for some differentials that have wet brakes.
At only a 100 hours per year you're probably fine using the cheaper fluid.
