Case 480B ignition

I started to replace my ignition switch on my Case 480B backhoe and found a wiring nightmare under the dash. Of course being an old machine it has been hacked over and over.

The issue I was trying to solve is that it won't shut down (it starts fine) and probably from the same or similar issue, runs the battery dead when I do get it shut down. I have to choke it to kill it.

Does anyone have the wiring diagram for this model (or know where I can get one)?

My new ignition has:

Bat and Ground (those are easy)
IGN (Ignition I would assume)
ST (not sure about this one, to the starter relay?)
ACC (accessory I assume)

There is a 4 wire harness with very faded color codes:

Red (or maybe orange with a red stripe spiraling around the wire)
Yellow or light brown (I think I know where this one goes. It has a plug that only fits in one place)
White with a red stripe
pink with red stripe (which wasn't connected to anything)

Outside of the harness there was a green wire that goes to the water temp gauge and a brown one that I "think" goes to the alternator gauge. I almost forgot, this is the diesel model.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try the link below to the Case site. Once to the linked site go to the Parts Catalog tab on the left side and do a search for your machine by model number. Once on that page it will say 'no description', click on that and it will bring up a list of catalog sections. Once there, go to page two under electrical system. I was just there and it doesn't have an actual wiring diagram per-se, but it does have a nice line drawing of the system showing components with the wiring going between them. With a little thought about things and a few assumptions, it should be fairly easy to figure things out.

That said, your correct in the descriptions of the posts on your switch. Knowing that, and using the line diagrams on the Case site ought to make getting your machine rewired a piece of cake. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded and printed things out. I'm looking to see if I can find the ignition switch connections and go from there. If I get too far out of it, I'll have to call in the dealership...I really hate to have to pay that bill, but I have a Jube that's needing my attention too...and it's a lot easier and closer to work on.

Thanks again!

Get yourself one of those 12V test lamps, make sure the wire ends are not touching ground, with the switch in the off position connect the power to the + terminal, clip the test lamp to ground, turn the key on,find the terminal that now has become hot (we'll call it #2) with the test lamp, now connect the test lamp to the power terminal on the injector pump, touch one of the remaining wires to terminal 2 till the test lamp comes on at the pump, put that wire on terminal two, there is usually a double terminal two which would be for the dash lights gauges etc,if your tractor has a heater starting aid that would go to terminal three and the start wire to 4.
Good luck

Thanks AJ. I'm an electrical engineer by trade so
I have one of those sitting in my lab. I'm going
to take it with me next time I get up there.
Between weather and a bug going around here, I
haven't been able to get up to ring things out.

From what I'm seeing, IGN should only go to the
starter, all the dash related stuff to AUX which
makes sense to me. My biggest issue is finding
who is where on the harness. I just wanted to get
as much information as I could before I went out
where I have no phone or internet.

Thanks again
