Almost hate to say it, but thinking about scrapping out my cat 955L. Any idea what it would be worth to a scrap dealer? I"m located in central Va, know anybody who deals in scrapping out big machines?

What does it weigh, 30-35,000 pounds?
Last I checked the scrap yard was paying a little less than 300 a ton.
What's wrong with it that you'd consider scrapping it?

I think the scrap price is similar here, you will usually get the highest if the material is prepared, meaning cut up to fit their machinery, if I recall how that works. They seem to want all the oils removed as well, fuel etc.

955L was a great tractor, I've ran many of those in years past. I assume this one is worn out, needs substantial repair/overhaul, worn out undercarriage or similar. Some though worn enough to not be used daily on jobsites, still make a handy tractor around a farm or similar, sometimes you'll find a buyer that would offer scrap price even though they may not intend to scrap part it out.

Thanks for the reply. I bought the machine about a year ago as a project. I was just going to use it as a farm machine and clear a few acres. The motor had spun a crank bearing, screwing up the crank and needs line boring. it had been running daily up until then. I was hoping to find a decent used engine to drop in, but after 6 months of looking, pretty much giving up. I"m not willing to drop another $8k in it for a reman motor, as honestly I really don"t have much more than scrap value in it now. Just looking for an easy way to get out from under it.

If the rest is in decent operating shape, sell it as needing an engine. It's got to be worth more than scrap. 3304's were a very popular engine.

Yep.

Kirby- I live in your area. I have a friend that hauls some scrap heavy equipment to Chesapeake, where the scrap can be loaded directly onto ships. He gets a far higher payoff there compared to non-waterfront scrap dealers. Scrap prices really fluctuate over time. If heavy equipment is like road vehicles, many that still operate but are not needed are being scrapped.

Looks like a 13x machine those were best ones hope someone needs it hate to see great machine like that go to scrapper
