Deere 450C brake band removal

To replace brake bands on a 450C do you need to split the track and remove the final drives? My brakes are slipping and there is no more adjustment, so it looks like I need new bands.

You do not have to remove the final drives , but you do have to remove the tracks, top tanks and top covers to remove the final drive top shaft. Once the top shaft is ready to be removed, support the drum assembly , and with large vise grip pliers snapped on the drum [ single jaw welding variety is best ] Hook up chain falls to pliers , then remove the drum assembly right out the top after shaft is pulled out. Pliers should be fairly tight so the bonded brake lining doesn"t flex and come loose from the steel band..

How come the tracks have to come off? I must admit my memory is a bit foggy and I haven't done a 450C in 30 years. But - as I recall we just loosened the track and then used a puller or slide-hammer to remove the top shaft from the final. Maybe my memory is incorrect?
