Was watching Gold Rush and I had to laugh. A couple
guys had to get a road with 3 ft. of snow plowed but
it was too icy for their big Volvo loader. They went
to another camp that had an old cable D8. They
claimed it hadn't run in 5 years and had sat through
-40 winters in the Yukon. It wasn't getting gas so
the one guy blew in the fuel tank and the pup motor
started and soon the diesel engine was running.
There's no way it would be that easy to get it going
if it sat for 5 years.

There is a lot of BS on Gold Rush. Having a Cat D8 older than that one I tend to believe they got it running. I am sure it took longer than shown on TV. I am not sure if is a 13A or a 14A.

I could believe it if you follow cats directions. Manual says to shut off gas and let pony motor run out of fuel this would keep carb clean. Some of my old tractor magnetos will go a long time and work but most would need the points cleaned of corrosion before you would get spark. Of course here in the northeast everything corrodes quickly. I was given a 1948 D7 that has sat for 15 to 20 years and old diesel fuel still works the old ones were made to run on almost anything close to fuel oil.

That's the very reason I don't watch that show except in passing, when changing the channels, or like the other night when a buddy told me to flip over there because they were trying to start that old 8. That said I was asked years ago to get one of the old 14A D8's running for a guy after it had set for a lot of years, and it took a lot more to get it going than 'blowing in the tank'. With that one the magneto had to be gone through because it had gotten water inside of it, the carb had to be cleaned of the rust that had begun inside if (the old carb is all cast iron), and on, and on. Then, after getting it running the customer ran it for awhile and let it set almost two years. Same thing, go through the mag and carb both because of water damage. As far as the main engine goes, getting it started was easy. In face one time we even pull started the old girl with one of his BIG farm tractors. All you had to do with it was get it turning over with the decompression lever actuated, then hit the fuel and knock the decompression lever off, and she'd come to life.

So, like you, I call BS on that whole deal. Heck did you see how big of a deal they made a few seasons ago about running one of the machines out of fuel? It was going to 'end their season' because running one out of fuel sucked all of the crap in the tank and put it right inside the engine where it would damage everything'. I guess no one on the show knows what the fuel filter does...LOL Then there was the time Parker ran his loader out of fuel. They discussed how it was going to end his season because he might not be able to get fuel back into the system to get it going. The whole time he was kneeling on the side of the machine with his knee less than 6 inches from the primer pump. That time they even drew the audience a flawed representation of how the fuel system worked, and why it was such a BIG. HUGE deal to run one out of fuel.....Gthey didn't take the time to actually look at how CAT plumbs their system, or know what a primer pump is, or know how to break loose the nut on the injectors to bleed the HP side of the system, or how to ether one just enough to get it running, to self bleed, when manual bleeding like that isn't possible because the injectors are inside the engine.

Yep, can't I can't stand watching a show that has to feed the audience misinformation as a way to make it 'more exciting'. Of course there are times it's like watching a train wreck and you have to see just how stupid those guys can get.....It's got me to thinking I should hit myself in the head with a hammer and knock myself senseless, then just stick my hand out and say pay me....that, in a nutshell, is what the show looks to me like is happening with those idiots....their getting paid to be stupid because it makes the show 'exciting'.....

On American Pickers they claimed JD was the largest tractor manufacturer in the world which isn't true. Pawn stars makes lots of mistakes too. The worst was saying the US team lost the gold medal to Canada in the 1980 Olympics. There was a reason they called them the "Dream Team" and it wasn't just because they beat the Russian team. They were underdogs and won the whole thing.

If only it could be spread on fields...

'a course you could spend what you spend on the cable bill now on heat for the shop, and get more use out of the money.

You mean to tell me reality TV isn't real? :(
Next you'll try telling me everything on the internet isn't really true.

Come on guys, Gold Rush is not a documentary. It's just entertainment.

Tracks and blade were shiny to. If it had been sitting five years they would sure have been rusty.

Look at what they did to "dirty Jobs" in the last 4 shows. Truth be told I think the end of the show was more an agreed upon between the host/creator and the network as the network cancelling it.

Now some other network has "Jobs that Bite!". Two of the producers worked at Discovery and led the push start Dirty Jobs, they basically do "dirty Jobs" with a host who looks like Mike Rowe, even had the same two camels humping as when Mike went to the same camel dairy in southern California.

People who go to the storage unit sales that that show goes to say that they pay people to act all upset and bid things up.

And "Axe Men"? Puh-leeze!!!!! The boss takes half a day off to go find the new guy who couldn't hack day 2 and rip him a new one for not showing up??? Really????????

And don't forget "Ice Road Truckers" and their cheesy graphics about what could happen if 3 dozen things go wrong exactly the right way in exactly the right order.

Want to know how I really feel?

These are some of the reasons I watch re-runs of old movies, Roy Rogers, etc. "Reality" isn't real! I lasted through 4 or 5 episodes of Axe Men before my BS meter pegged out.
