The original subject was "Smokey D282 in a TD6".

I wondered if you figured this out. I have a TD92B with the same engine (D282), that was exhibiting the same issue. At present it runs for a while and then stops, but the smoke looks the same. It is blue white at the start and then for a while it was clearing. It just got worse and is not running reliably now. I pulled a couple injectors because it seemed like a fuel issue, both gave a reasonable spray pattern over a cloth. So I am guessing fuel is getting there. It feels like I might be ordering a rebuild kit some time in my future. Any thoughts?

Loosten the timing cover screws so fuel can leak out while running. If it runs better then injection pump needs serviced. Small bits of flex ring is plugging the return side which will cause pump to shut down.

The D282 engine is kind of a strange duck. If you have the advance not just right it will start to smoke and flutter at about 1000-1250 rpms. Take a look at the pump tag and make sure you have the right pump for your unit. A D282 pump from a hydro tractor has its advance set different than a D282 from a manual trans. Also the D282 had a really low opening pressure for its nozzles. I have found bumping them up to 1000-1100 psi will make this motor run much better and start 10 times easier. The running for a while then quitting is a classic sign of a worn flex ring. Get ahold of a good pump shop and they can help you out. If you dont have any in you area give me a call. I have repaired hundreds of these pumps. Al Baker 231/757/0064

I took the injectors off and lapped and reset them, I took the pump off and put new seals and flex ring into it. it still does it. it starts fine, makes good power and clears up when up to temp. I think it is just because it is an old low compression motor. the fuel is burning off the tops of the pistons until they heat up.
Your engine sounds to me like a blocked return line. when that flex ring fails it goes to bits and they get into the glass ball check valve right on top the pump. I saw the return line on a log skidder get kinked once and it smoked so bad it looked like a forest fire.
