Case 450 Serial Number

I bought a Case 450 Crawler/Loader/Backhoe up here in Canada and am trying to find out the year of manufacture. The serial number on the frame (see attached picture) is 4228826, which doesn't make any sense. All the Case documentation lists numbers starting with 3. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here are the pictures of my machine and the location of the serial number tag.

the tractor serial tag(that appears to be the loader serial) should have been on the battery box, I do find it odd it has "450" stamped on it but then we never sold a loader type crawler all ours had a six way blade, if it has not been painted it is a 75-79 with the "power Yellow" paint

Sorry Tom what I meant is the serial tag for the crawler is on the left hand side of the battery rack and I can see it on the picture the person posted , only problem it has been painted over it so if he clean it up he will find the right serial number. we sold at least 4 of those with the 4 in 1 bucket and they are the latest one Case built before switching to 450 B and I have seen them with this tag on the loader which is correct but Case did this writting 450 under the loader serial number , they also did it on many 580 SE . I am well aware that you know these machine better than me. sorry for confusion. jc

Thank you. I didn't notice the painted over tag until you pointed it out. That is awesome. I had called Case technical and sent them the same pictures, they couldn't help me. Same for the local Case dealership. Neither one recognized that the serial was for the loader. Again thanks for all replies. I'm glad I found this forum.

I would not say better than you at all LOL, on my 450 the tag is missing but I think it is a 74 or early 75 as it is the Federal Yellow with Power Red tracks but it does have the roll cage mounts on it and if I remember right that was only on 74 and later tractors but I could be off a year, thanks for your help as I for sure get things wrong at times, I always wanted to order one setup like the one in this post but here it seemed everyone wanted a dozer about 50% of the ones we sold 350/450 had a backhoe as well, sorry for the ramble

I went back and looked as I had missed the serial tag as well being painted over I also see that it has a 580B style backhoe attachment with the dual lift cylinders and extendahoe as well I do agree jc that is a very late 450 indeed, as all the 450's with hoes we sold had the 580CK style single boom cylinder that did not go over center for transport, that is a very nice equipped unit

The previous owner bought the machine brand-new in 1978. With the backhoe mounted, it is very back-heavy. He said that a front counterweight was available for it but he didn't buy it. He filled the front bucket instead whenever he used the backhoe.

being rear heavy was very common it only takes a few min to remove the hoe but then with the loader it will be tail light, I agree the bucket being full will counter the hoe weight still a very handy machine even with those faults

Thanks for the reply. Have you heard of anyone building a rear counterweight to attach to the backhoe mounts when the backhoe is removed?

yes we had several people here build ripper units that latched right in the backhoe mounts it would be no real difficult issue to build a weight the same way other than mounting it up one would need a lift/hoist or loader to lift it in to place

Thank you "Case Nutty 1660" for sharing your extensive knowledge. Very much appreciated.

Is it possible to mount a dozer blade instead of the 4-in-1 bucket? Also, has anyone made use of the rear hydraulics for attachments other than the backhoe? I'm thinking of tree spades, etc.

a blade can be mounted on the loader frame but you already have one with the 4-in one bucket just lift the clamshell up and you have a dozer, those 4-in ones are really handy after you use it a bit you will see why. If you did not get one with it the ops manual will detail its use, the only thing you lack over a 6 way is tilt and angle but the other benefits will really surprise you I would love to have one myself and am working on a deal for a 350 with loader 4-in one and ripper here is a shot of my 450 that I have
