D7-17A brakes - pin came out - reassembly help

I have learned a great deal from a few of you guys by your responses to my questions. Since I am going to work on my D7 this week I thought I would post my problem and get updated before I begin work. The left brake had not been working. I thought it was worn out or out of adjustment. What I found was a pin had come out and was laying in the bottom of case. The pin must be 6 or 7 inches long with reduced diameters on both ends. I have removed both inspection covers - one on the backside and one on top. I have not removed the fuel tank or seat. I see there is a fairly large cover on top, but I don't think that will come off without removing the operators platform/seat. I would prefer not to remove the operators platform/seat if I can help it. Can I put this back together through the two smaller inspection plates - one on top and one on the backside? What holds this pin in place so it won't come apart again? I assume it got so loose and moving it down the road it just vibrated itself out? Are there any washers, pins, or clips that hold it? There are no holes in this pin, just the reduced diameter on each end. Are there any diagrams that might be available. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Andy

You have a big problem inside Andy. Those pins go thought the ends of the band and the the lever. I think the band might have broken. Get the cover off and check for damage.

You should have 2 washers on top pine anchor and you have to removed the large cover easly and that cover have 12 screws 3/8

Thanks for the replies. I already had the two small inspection covers off - one on top and one on the back. I cleaned the pin with the smaller diameters on each end up with some oil. I reached in the top with one hand and centered the hole in the brake band with the casting. With the other hand I went in through the back inspection hole and inserted the pin. It went right in and the smaller diameters locked into the casting. I screwed up the tightener some to get decent movement of the brake pedal. Tightened up the other side as well. I haven't moved the dozer, but I am sure both brakes are much much better now. Reaching in from the back it feels like there is at least 3/8 to 7/16 inch of brake lining on the steel band. I really wonder if the band tightening bolts loosened up over time. They turned really easy when I tightened the bands up. I have driven this machine down the road 5 miles one way a couple of times over the years. If the bolts turn easily and the brake band was bouncing away going down the road couldn't it tend to back the bolts out with all of the vibration? Then when the left tightener got so loose the pin that holds the band to the casting just slid inward and fell into the case. Anyway I think everything is back in its right place and ready to work. Thanks again.

My man you ARE GOOD. never hurts to give it a try. Maybe everything will turn out for the good.
