Going to be hard to explain but it is stamped IN THE REAR housing now here is where. If you walked up to the rear of the tractor and just tried to reach around the rear end your right fingers should be on the number. Written vertical on the rear of the right side right behind the final drive housing. Please post back if you find it or not.

Sorry forgot to go back and check but yes you are exractly right only the last 4 digits are the actual number the rest is the series and it would have been found on that plat at your left heal. You have it figured out now. LOts of folks do not ever find that stamped number. Glad to be of help. Probably have owned 20 or more of those td8s over the years.
