580 K lock up

I freshened up the transaxle in my 580 k series 1 2 wheel drive with new bearings and a 3-4 synchro hub. Everything else looked very good except the spiders were a bit loose but not bad.
It sounds good , shifts good but as I was driving up a slight grade in second gear it stopped dead, locked up. No noise, no nothing just an instant stop. I picked it up and rotated the tires by hand and they rotated fine. I set it back down and everything seems normal. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe a loose shift fork but I'm sure I went over them thoroughly. I'm going to pop it apart just to make sure. I'm wondering what else I should be looking for. It has about 2 hours on it since I was in it, so I'm pretty sure I've missed something. It had done it before getting into it while very slow coasting with the shuttle in neutral. It would stop and then release after forward motion quit. I never really found the issue during the rebuild. I attributed it to a sloppy 3-4 synchro.

This a Case transaxle you got with a Borg Warner shuttle, there was a common problem with them, the brakes used to lock up due to the actuators been worn, brake would lock going forward and stop the machine, back up an inch and the would release and be free again, this happened on both the dry and wet brake models,if it locks up again reverse a bit and if it frees I would say one of the actuators is worn, its very unlikely that something was left loose,if it was it would stay loose and locked up.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I had thought of a brake lock up but dismissed it as I replaced all the frictions and discs when I did the trans. The actuators looked good with no signs of wear except for a slight patterning on one of the actuators which I replaced. The ramps looked smooth. I run the brakes fairly loose so as to not cause any unnecessary drag. Could the actuator hang without applying any brake? It was maybe 1/4 mile since the brakes had been applied. I was under power climbing a hill when it stopped. It was very sudden like, no slow down just a complete stop.

I have the transaxle out and the covers pulled. Aside from a very stiff 3-4 synchro, everything looks fine. I will pull the brake housings back off after a bit and see what I can find there.

Yes I would agree that if you did not use the brake that it unlikely to be the cause, check that the spring pins are in the selectors and that none are broken, not much else I can add as you seem to be competent enough to handle the job.
Good luck

I was also looking for a stiff shifting problem for 3-4. The 4th gear bushing galled up badly. I'm thinking from the looks of it that it may have momentarily seized. I'm going to still pull the brakes and take a look. Parts are cheap compared to down time.
