Detroit 2-71 in HD5

After setting the winter, engine started sucking water into one cylinder and oil. Also, was spewing water out around the two bolts on the "air chamber" cover on the right side of the engine. Thinking antifreeze may have been low, pulled the engine apart and found nothing that jumped out at us. Didn"t see normal signs of head gasket leaks; but, only ran engine 30 minutes or so before seeing the problem and shutting it down. Know nothing about these engines; would a leaking head gasket allow water into the air chamber or do we need to look further? Have a new overhaul kit; but of course, don"t want to install it until we"re confortable as to where the water is coming from in the airchamber. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Carl

Be prepared to use the rebuild kit. Its most likely the o-ring a the top around one or both liners. There is an o-ring at top that keeps coolant out of the airbox, and one at the bottom which keeps oil out to the airbox. If it has been ran without coolant or with low coolant, the heat without coolant present distorts and flattens the o-ring. The headgasket is a fire-ring for the most part. These things have no intake valves just ports in the liner center that allow the blower to fill the piston for upward movement and compression. Its scary how simple they are. You can do the field rebuild without pulling the block.

2-71 is a low block engine , it has head gasket
like other engines and does not use the fire
rings and perimeter gasket like later 71 series.
Liners have no orings as they are dry liners,
only the 53 and 92 series use wet upper liners.

Those engines crack in the air box ,you have the
symptoms.

Take the air box covers off and put some air
pressure in the cooling system, you should see
the water show in the air box.

Those heads also have tubes in which the injectors set. There is also an O-ring there thatt seals the tube. They can also leak coolant. Make sure you get that ad pressure tested as well Also if the engine has the original liners in ti the new ones will look different. Also there are oversize liners are available. Make sure you get a good fit. A 2-71 is a little different than a larger later 71 series.

Check the core hole plugs in the air box, some of them have copper gasket on them, can also can get oil in the air box from bad rings and blower seals, best remove air box covers and presserize the cooling system,Al
