Best small skidsteer

I don't need it often but must have a small skidsteer, gotta be hydrostatic. I would consider a standup track machine. Cost is a factor;what would give the most bang for the buck?

And probably a lot more money than the OP wants to spend. It would be a lot easier to answer if the poster specified a budget and/or a specific machine he was considering. It's hard for anyone to know which machines are good and bad off the top of their head.

I don't know his budget, true. But you can pick up a used ASV RC30 for about $8500. Only thing to remember is that all the bogey wheels will need re-packing, at 7-8 years old. Just like other machines, none are perfect, and you get what you pay for!

If you don't need it often and cost is a factor then renting is the only way to go. No matter what brand, you're going to spend at least $6K for a fair machine, over $8K for a work ready one and over $10K for a nice one. Anything under $6k is almost certainly going to be a mechanics special. I paid $1400 for mine and it's 40 years old and now has $2300.00 of new engine and it still isn't working right. I'll have another grand or 2 into it before long. I'd have been far better off renting.

I have a Gehl 5620 I bought 4yrs ago with bucket, forks, and universal attachment plate for $8500 and I am very happy with it. The best one you can have is a brand your local dealer sells so you have parts and service info available.

Owatanna makes a good small skid loader and you can get them at a good price. I wouldn"t buy a 1840 case again if my life depended on it.

I think I'm going this way. There are plenty for sale reasonable. When my 2.5 loader is to big we rent a POS 257 Cat. But we now need one smaller yet 2-3 hrs a week.

We bought a 330 probably 20 years ago and I just changed the spark plugs last year. Simple, easy to use. I bought a newer case because I needed a larger machine and although the case when running is great the 330 is always ready for a back up. Owatanna made early John deere machines, just put different paint and decals on them, so if you need parts they are available at your local dealer. Good luck

If you did residential landscaping on narrow lots or in tight quarters, you'd need a small machine. Bigger isn't better if you don't have the room to use it.
