I got it running now I want to change engine oil.Is it alright to use a 10w40 like Rotella or stick to 30w like my book says.

15-40 will be just fine.

I stick to 30 wt as my books say for my old Cats--I really don't run them in the winter so the heavier oil is fine.
I have been told that the chemicals added to muti-weight have a detrimental effect on the old bushings,bearings and journals---never saw any test results though.

Modern low emission oils are not suitable for these old engines. I use Supertech 30 from Walmart or Travelers 30 from Tractor Supply. These oils carry the proper rating.
