I am going to look at an Allis Chalmers HD3 crawler. I have run Case and John Deere crawlers but never an AC. I did a search of this website and find that HD3 and HD 4 are similar machines. I wonder if anyone could give me a basic explanation of the controls . I know they are a clutch steer machine , but any other info on brakes , reverser , engine controls etc. would help me alot. The owner of the machine I am interested in has passed away and no one there seems to know anything about it.

Been several years since I worked on one. Put a clutch disc in it, has a foot clutch. The reverser is based on Allis power director, handle couple feet long with button on top. Glow plug in intake and has push button. Don"t remember if turning brakes are with the steering leavers or not. Much of the machine is based on D15 tractor.

The first HD3 had a Detroit 2-71 and it's rare. The 2nd HD3 was based on the D15 farm tractor. Came standard with a shuttle shift coupled to a gear transmission. The two-speed "Power Director" was optional. Has dry steering clutches that can be removed without taking off the final drives - similar to a Deere 450. Diesel engine is direct injected - NO glow plugs. Just an intake-manifold "air heater." Original steering clutch discs were fiber and optional or new ones are metallic.

HD4 is quite different. Radiator is in back by the dashboard, has a bigger 200 c.i. engine, and torque-converter drive. Undercarriage is the same as the HD3.

The reverser is the same basic clutch system as the "power director" in the tractors. With some different gearing in the torque housing, the low/neutral/high becomes reverse/neutral/high.
Industrial tractors, forklifts, etc. used this system. The long lever on the left side is the reverser. The mechanism is two sets of multi plate clutches running in oil, all in one clutch housing. Some adjustment is available through the right side cover with shims. Quite rugged and forgiving, but after all these years, anything is possible.

Thank you to everyone who took time to reply. I am hoping to go look at it in the next couple days. The dozer is in a building and hasnt been started in a while - maybe a couple or 3 years. The owners got it to turn over so now I will try starting it . I am going to take the batteries out of my big truck , charge them up good and hope for a warm day. I assume it is pos. ground . Thanks again for the help.

Iwas able to get the HD 3 running after a little work. I bought it and got it home a couple days ago .It needs a little more work-mostly smaller stuff so far . Thanks again to all who responded.
