does anybody have advice on how to fix the seal on the track tightening cylinder? pictures?, do you have to open the track?

Short lesson. Break the track, slide the idler out . Take an air hose and blow in the track adjuster. The rod should blow out , then replace the seals. Now really lot more to it than that. If you hit my e-mail send me a phone number and I will go over all the tricks with you.

I am hoping to be able to work on it today after work, i am assuming it is the tightener, the track came really loose, i put grease in it, but it would not tighten up at all...i am assuming once i take the covers off i will see where all the grease went. I tried to send you a PM with my number, but it wasnt allowed?, you didnt have an email to respond to either...maybe i was in the wrong spot?

thanks again for any help...I went out on a limb and bought this D7E to clear 30 acres in hopes of selling it when i am done...I am 2/3s complete...hopefully this will be one of the last repairs I need to make...maybe 40 hours left to put on it...

(quoted from post at 17:54:35 09/12/13) Check if the greace is going out in coil spring side or if she going out between the cylinder and the rod

i think it is going out at the side of the coil...it was getting dark last night when it happened...but I put my hand in and pulled out a hand full of grease on the coil side...could have been from greasings done previoiusly...will know for sure when i get cover off tonight.

yes---as hector says you may be at the end of your travel for the ram--their are maximum distances that the ram may travel and that happens when the tracks are over 100% worn.

it does not appear to be at the end..there is about 6 inches on the loose one and the tight one has about 4 inches.

definitely coming from spring side...from looking at it, it appears that the shaft coming out toward the front of dozer is just bolted to the pump, and that the actual hydraulic part is the side that goes into the spring?

quick update on project...I have idler pushrod loose from tightener, but cant seem to get the idler to pull forword...like it is wedged in or something. I hooked my tractor to one chain and skid steer to another chain, each chain was attached to eyelet of idler, while pulling I tapped with hammer...got NO movement... next step I am going to try is see if I can get the dozer near a tree without tracks coming off and chain to tree and go in reverse and see if I can pop it forward...any tips on getting the idler ram loose?
