Just rebuilt engine complete. All new bearings,pistons, complete head rebuilt, injectors. It will not start unless you use ether. It has a gray-white smoke until you load engine then smoke is black. Smokes all time. Ran OK until the rebuild. Any help will be appreciated.

Given nothing but the info you provided, it sounds like a timing problem to me. Wether it's the injection pump out of time, or the whole engine out of time I can't say, but one tooth out on a timing gear, or a few degrees on the pump, and your either not running at all or running really, really bad like your describing.

My 3204 was rebuilt with 3 ring pistons and once primed starts almost immediately even in -10C without any help. Is the air filter new? Mine didn't smoke at all but the first set of rings didn't seat and it went through a lot of oil. Out it came but at least was on warranty.

Might be timed one turn of the crank out.
Is it timed with a fixture or pin timed?
