at an idle about how much fuel should be returning from the pump to the tank , I bought this machine and got it running , ran kinda ok but smoked and missed , figured it was pump so bought a seal kit and flex ring pulled pump drive ring was gone so resealed the pump with new drive ring , put it back together and it ran the same , ordered new injectors and installed , RAN GREAT for about 25 hours then acted like it plugged a filter , put new filters on no change . brought it home and pulled pump pulled it apart and found super fine aluminium shavings but cant really detirmine where from cleaned real well reassembled and put back on , still nothing . any ideas , thanks mike

They don't return a whole lot of fuel. Take the return fitting completely out of the pump and see if it will start (IF you can safely deal with a bit of leaked fuel).

it still wont run with the return line disconnected , it does not have the check ball in the return anymore . thanks mike

As Bob mentioned, return fuel flow is slight. With engine running loosten the timing cover so fuel can leak out to test for return side restriction, if it speeds up and runs better check all return line and fittings for blockage. If no change recheck supply side flow out of final filter, may have something slowing flow. Not common, but pump inlet screen may be plugged too.

Pretty well eliminated return restriction ,took the return fitting out of the pump and ran it , no change , inlet screen in pump is clean and clear and ran elect pump to inlet bypassing filters ,so no restriction there . thanks mike

It would be my guess that the metal filings you found came from the transfer pump, that would account for you thinking the filters were plugged but its the transfer pump not making enough pressure to charge the hydraulic head hence the engine running badly, have it off and take it to the fuel injection shop.
