Backhoe cylinder quit working?

I have Cat 931b with a backhoe. I heard a "pop" when using my backhoe and then the stick cylinder wouldn't do anything. The stick was all the way in with the cylinder fully extended. The control valve seems fine and it feels like oil is going through the hoses but the engine doesn't labor at all against the relief valve. That cylinder always creeped a little and I'm wondering if a seal can just all of a sudden blow out with a "pop"? The only other thing I can think is the cylinder rod broke internally but then I'd think it would be more a loud bang rather than a pop. If I put the boom down and drive ahead the stick goes out but as soon as I lift the boom the stick just drops back down.
 
You need to open the cylinder and see what is wrong,get it down low and remove the pin,block the cylinder up and loosen the gland nut and remove the rod,it may be that the seal has failed or the piston come off or a broken rod,what you don't need is to damage the cylinder barrel,so move it as little as possible.

Years ago I was pushing hard on a tree with our old IH backhoe, and blew the nut right off the end of the rod inside the crowd cylinder.
I cleaned up the threads, and loctited a new nut on.
And was a little more careful after that.
 
I don't know if a seal blowing would make a pop but the repair shop said it's not that uncommon for the rod to disconnect from the piston. He said it happens on tilt cylinders on D5's. I got the parts guy to send me a diagram of the cylinder and it uses a self locking bolt instead of a nut to hold the piston on. If the bolt did break, then hopefully a new bolt will solve the problem rather than needing a cylinder rod. They shop does build new cylinder rods too and can cut off and reuse the pin mount on the rod end. I hope it's not too costly of a repair.
