HD-4 Lacks Power

I was showing my HD-4 fitted with full-size Case
backhoe to a potential buyer today. At one point
as we drove it back and forth, it failed to move
when climbing a very slight grade. I never have
had issues with lack of power but then I never
have used it with the backhoe attached either.
Without the heavy backhoe it pushes dirt and loads
really well.

So I tried each of the three speeds and two of the
three worked okay but the third gear just did not
seem to have enough power to move the thing around
reliably. What do you suppose is going on? The
engine is strong and runs great.

Sounds like torque converter trouble. I assume you checked fluid level? Maybe a transmission filter? If those check out ok, it would lead me to think the converter is weak. Did you try it in reverse? If same condition occurs when in reverse, that would confirm the converter. But, if you have good power in reverse, but not forward, it could be the reverser. I have an HD-4, but never got too deep into one. If someone reads this who has more experience with the HD-4's than I do, they might have a better answer for you.

The fluid in my converter is contaminated with water. It looks like strawberry milk. Not sure how water is getting in there but it does. Maybe changing it out for fresh fluid would help?

Is there a possibility that the quick coupler for the backhoe wasn't completely plugged in causing the hydraulics to draw power from the machine ?? Just a thought....
