JD 500A backhoe, starter/solenoid

I can't figure out how to get the back bolt out. In the front it takes an end wrench the way it recessed, not enough room for a socket.

In the back there is no room to turn a wrench. There must be some way to get it out, or they couldn"t have gotten it in there. Help!

The starter doesn"t engage all the time, it takes several tries, and its hit or miss. I"m guessing it needs the bendix. I just want to take it off and get it to a starter shop.

KEN Not certain about your 500 but on some of the jd tractors the only way to get the starter of is with a special JD wrench. The wrench looks like a c shaped boxed end wrench. Lets you reach over and around to back the bolt out. Maybe some
one will have a photo of one of the wrench they can post.

Thanks, I have one of those wrenches around somewhere, I bought it for the '66 Harley. I don't remember what I needed it for, I just have to find it.

You didn't say on the bolt, but if it doesn't have a 12 point head get yourself one that does. I say this because, for one, I never remember seeing a 6 point 'special' C shaped wrench, they usually come in 12 point only. That said using a bolt with a 12 point head will allow the use of a smaller size wrench (ie- usually like a 1/2 for a 1/2 bolt -vs- a 3/4 for a standard 1/2 bolt with a 3/4 six point head). With the smaller wrench size it usually makes getting to the difficult areas alot easier as well as giving you a smaller degree of turn required to get a fresh bite when loosening or tightening the bolt. Good luck.

I'm not familiar with that machine specifically... but the way I usually get the back bolt out on most 3 bolt starters is with a 3/8" drive socket, 2.5" wobble extension, 5" wobble extension then whatever other extensions are necessary to get out in the open to work the ratchet. The wobble extensions give enough angle to get around the starter motor without the nuisance of a u-joint.

The "C" wrench worked, took a while, couldn't get many degrees on a turn.

Got it out, to the shop and back. Its installed and working like a champ.
Thanks, Ken
