Have a 1968 Case 310G that is stuck in 1st gear. I haven"t had it long, spent only around an hour runningh it so far. It shifted/operated fine. Then the fan belt broke, and while sitting it got vandalized. But, I"ve been able to start it and bring it home. Trans. fluid levels were low, and I wanted to drain it out, replace it with new. Got 2 quarts of water & 2 quarts of sludge out. I definitely didn"t do a good enough look over on the machine when I bought it.
I"m pretty concerned.
I"m hoping to get the shifter off...think something (detente balls?) might be stuck. Anybody have any ideas?

Maybe the vandals forced the shift lever out of the selector gate,if you remove the lever you may be able to get them back in line with a large screwdriver, pull up the rubber boot and as I recall there is a snap ring holding the lever in,remove it and the lever should pull up,the boot must be letting the water in when there is water in the oil.

I was wondering about the boot being the point of entry; the boot is torn badly and doesn"t hold the shaft very snug. Should be able to engineer something if I can"t find a replacement.
I"ll attempt the fix you mentioned Monday. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you can't get the Case one # A57876 a gaiter from an auto steering rack cut down to fit should keep the water out, around the lever is the most likely place it can get in.

Not uncommon to find water nobody services regularly. Shifter unbolts from side easy to remove I have all parts if you need any.
