I'm looking at a 4500 backhoe tomorrow, is there anything inherent to these machines that I should be looking at. I have a 4000 (3 cyl) so I'm familiar with the basic tractor other than the shuttle shift. Also would like to know approximate weight. Thanks Chuck

These were Fords best early hoes.. They had an advantage over most others due to weight and speed .. With R-1 traction tires made this hoe one of the best "Mud" machines out there.. Now , the down side....Pay attention to the motor oil.. If it has even the slightest hint of gray [water/coolant] in the oil , walk away.. These engines were "parent bore" blocks.. Meaning that there are no replaceable cylinder liners.. Any cylinder erosion on these engines is a big problem.. The only cure is to bore and dry sleeve the blocks .. or change the engine.. Another problem with this machine is the swing chains on the backhoe swing.. If these chains break, replacements were $ 600 a half or $ 1200 bucks for both.. Might be more now.. I priced them about 20 years ago..
