Head crack sealer

My TD-14 has a cracked head between the valves. The industrial head shop wants $2000 + parts, not going to happen. I found several outfits on the net selling head and block crack sealer. Anyone use a sealer or have information? Thanks, PK.

That would be better to not happen either. That stuff might
work on he outside but defiantly will not work in the
combustion chamber.

Either get another head or get this one repaired correctly... You go pouring goup into this one and you'll be rebuilding the bottom along with the head.

It mabey sounds a bit high... but I don't rightly know how much labor goes into repairing it, etc. It is a very specialised repair with only a handful of shops doing that work... Normally you would just replace the head, but if it's rare enough... then you repair it... and pay what you got to pay.

I do not endorse this, but I will just throw it out there. My dad, a depression era person "fixed" many cooling side leaks with very finely ground black pepper. Would put about a teaspoon in the cooling system and run it for about 30 min. Don"t know why it worked, but it did. Again, I would not do it, but it worked for him.

Forget about any additives you can put in the coolant there are none that will mend a crack, the two methods that are used to repair cracked heads and blocks are cold metal stitching and pool welding, they both require the head off,the metal stitching they will strip and stitch the crack, then machined it and fit new valve seats, that type repair has only a 50/50 chance of success,if the engine ever got hot it can start leaking again, the pool welding method if you could find anyone that can do it involves cutting out the cracked area, heating the head back to casting temperature and pouring in new metal, machine it back to standard, I have never known that method to fail but it is very expensive to do, there are lots of IH heads on ebay have a look there, failing that go to the IH site Red Power at the link below and see if you can find a used one.
Good luck

I've talked to several head re-builders and they all use the same outfit on Portland Oregon to weld heads. Some sort of special process that works good. I emailed them direct and they said $1750. If I can't find another head I'll go with them. Thanks for all the input. PK

If you have to ship the head out to be repaired call Sperry's
Welding in Capac Mi. That's all they do and it will be way less
expensive. I lived in Michigan before I moved to Kentucky and
used them for repairs for thirty years, the best cast welder in
Michigan, Al Spiller worked there until he passed away.

Kelly: I am 70+ years old and ran my share of td 14s. They were know for cracked heads. No kind of addiative will fix the head. The $ 1700 to 2,000 sounds a little high. First where are you located.
Second get me the casting number from the head. Think there are still several laying around here.
Does your tractor have a second radiator tank back at the rear of the hood next to the dash. That was an improvement to help stop the head cracking.

Hi Jm, I live in Noxon, Montana it's near the Idaho line. This dozer doesn't have an extra tank.
Casting number is, 8064 DA. also has a 8 30A. Thanks for replying. I'm attaching a photo of the machine. PK

Aj is right there is only the two ways of repairing cracked heads in the combustion area, stitching and puddle welding,I have had loads of heads stitched over the years, some held that were on engines that did not have turbos,no good at all on turbos, had D8 heads puddle welded and they held, but it was way too slow and too dear, find a good used head, what method of repair did you get the quote for,it seems an awful lot for a repair.

It's a weld process. Both head shops said they are the only ones they trust to get it right and will last. Not sure just what they do. But yes, it's way expensive. I'm trying to locate a good head now. PK

There was a fellow in your area who welded case head for mw when I lived in thompson falls. AS I recall. Couldnt be more than 30-- 40 miles from you. Sorry cannot rember the name
