JD 40 crawler

Hi, I"ve found a JD 40 crawler with blade, the guy want $4000.00 for . The tractor is in good shape, the engine have good oil pressure and run great, the transmission and steering work good too. The chains and sprokets are 50% used. IT"s for my wood lot, to make some trails to haul logs. Do you think it"s too much. Bernard in Quebec Canada

Thats a little high with the wear on the chains and sprockets. Bet Gemdozer wishes he'd said that. LOL

Hi, thanks for your reply. That crawler is like a toy for me, I don"t have in mind to work hard with. The guy tell me he sold the tractor same price he pay for. Bernard in Quebec Canada

I wish I could get the same price I paid for all my equipment if I sold it. I'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

Pretty high if the chains are 50%. $1500-2250.00 US would be more like it. And you aren't going to make much in the way of trails with a 40C. They are fine for pushing loose dirt or snow or sandy ground, rolling rocks and logs and such. But they aren't a real construction dozer. They were built to pull, not push. Most of the blades are the inside arm, single lift cylinder type. They only cut on the right side, if at all. I love my 40C, but it's not a 350 or D2.

People are asking a lot for them lately with scrap so high. If the chains are 50% according to the seller, they are probably more like 75-90% worn. New chains are not available and you'll need to cob something together like did. For $4K you might keep looking and find a 350 or something a little better suited to trail building. I use mine in the woodlot, but it goes a lot better in winter on snow.
