Cracked rail

I have a crack in one rail. It is the bottom side that rides on the rollers. I know the steel is farily good. What rod should I use? Thanks Stan

I had a broken rail and just V'd it out and welded it with 7018. Lasted a couple years until I put new tracks on. One of the split master links was stripped too and I welded it with 7018. Never had a problem. I wouldn't use a real high tensile rod. Even ice lugs on pads, they recommend just 7018 and maybe a little preheat.

Stick weld's right, a 7018 should be just fine. Over the years I've done everything from repairing cracks to fabricating two complete 'backstops' for the recoil springs on a 977 CAT, and have used 7018 on all of it. If there was any of those jobs I'd have worried about it would have been the recoil spring stops, but as it stands they have been holding for over a year now, under use, with absolutely no problems.
