Cat O-rings for oil cooler?

I forgot to ask about the O-rings for the oil cooler. One was missing. It probably fell out when I took the cooler off and the other one has some damage. They are a brown colour. Is this a special O-ring or can just a standard black O-ring be used? I wouldn't think the engine oil cooler is much different than hydraulics.
 
A lot of the o-rings that are brown are viton, a material that handles higher temps than standard buna-70 o-rings.
 
You might be onto something. The coolant hoses on the oil cooler are silicon. Still don't think the oil would be any hotter than hyd. oil. Maybe Bob or another Cat expert will chime in.
 
A lot of aircraft engines use Viton O-Rings for the higher heat capability. Years ago I went to an aircraft supply house for O-Rings for a Corvair pushrod tubes, it never leaked again and I had that engine partially apart twice and still reused the old O-Rings.

Usually the brown rings are viton, as others have stated. As far as using a standard buna-N in it's place let me say it like this. I have seen buna-n rings used in the oil cooler lines many times over the years with no leaks. I also had a truck with a 3406 brought to me awhile back with a leak from one of the oil cooler houing connections. When I pulled it apart I found one viton ring and another buna-n ring. The viton ring was soft and dry, the buna-n ring was hardened and leaking. In the end the viton will definately handle higher temps and last longer in that application, but the buna-n can, and often will seal just as good, for just as long....or not....Basically it's nothing more than a gamble to go that route.
