Hi, their appears to be oil coming out of the breather on top of the
torque converter on my Dresser TD15B. Any clues on what could
cause this ?
 
Sorry never seen a TD15 but have had that type problem on my old michigan loader. Had a hydraulic pump with a bad seal leaking hydraulic fluid into the transmission overfilling it.

Have you been adding hydraulic oil lately?
 
IIRC there is a scavenging pump to take excess oil away from the converter housing. I believe there is a screen that can clog keeping the oil in the converter.
Another possibility is the converter is going south,leaking more oil than the scavenging pump can carry away.
 
Not really a scavenging pump but the flywheel ring gear slings the waste oil back to the transmission. That line would be lower right on the torque convertor. Sometimes that line will get crushed or mashed by mud in the floor pan but most time it is a case that your torque convertor seals are gone and the torque is flooding the housing. Torque will more than likely have to be removed and resealed.
 
jm is right on the bell housing scavaging system and there is no scavage pump.
Do you have any other symptoms like heating, power loss or aluminum color in your oil? Did the leak out the breather just start or has it always been this way?
On later machines the breather was removed and replaced by a line from the converter to the main case but I can't remember where it attached to the main case. This change could have happened for this reason but if the leak just started on your machine you may have other causes.

Jean Forgot to tell you as the other poster has they tried a puke line but the thing you are going to have to watch is. While some is coming out the top more is probably going in the starter. Next thing you know it will be hard to start or worse will catch on fire. Real common on those old units when the torque was flooding.
 
I haven't notice any heating or aluminium colour in the oil as of yet. i will however replace the filters and have a closer look.

Meanwhile we did replace the starter as it was filling with oil. After replacing it, we noticed oil was still coming out of it. We then cleaned the breather out as it was clogged solid. Seams to have solved the oil heading to the starter. As far as I know that is when the leaking from the breather started.

I'll have a look for the scavage line to see if it's crushed.

Any idea on how much could possibly cost replacing seals on converter ?
 
Do not know where you are located but one of the best 15 torque rebuild guys is close here in Tenn. You will have trouble finding parts and what is out there are expensive. If it was bad enough to flood the starter expect to be pulling it before long. The longer it goes the more it will cost. There is some aluminum parts running close to metal parts and if they touch things go fast.
 
Jean where was the breather and scavenge line located - we've got a td-15 with the same problem and need to check the breather and scavenge line.

Just had the converter resealed and it didnt fix the problem...
