5.9L Turbo Cummins

I am looking at a motorhome with the 5.9L turbo Cummins engine with 6 sp Alison trans. What kind of reputation does this engine have? It is rated for 230 Hp at 2500 rpm. Any idea of how many miles this set up should be good for?

Thanks for any comments

Same engine as a Dodge truck. Mine is barely broken in at 150K turned up to 300+ HP. Lots out there over 1/2 milion miles.

The 5.9 came out in 1983?, Case/Cummins started the "B" back then, made it to Dodge into 1988. It is a good engine, lots of parts for them. Likely any engine, needs maintance. Sure they have some faults, but for the most part its fine.

Cummins with an Alison is a great dependable power train. As has been said here, the Cummins will be running long after all else is shot.

IMO, best available combination for light/medium duty use. Know of several Dodges with 5.9 that have over 300kmi. and still running strong. Seems that I read on here that several school systems are using Cummins/Allison in buses with good longevity. Good luck.

If it happens to be a "P-pump" motor, which is a mechanical injector pump, with routine maintenance should last close to a million miles! Many of these motors on the road today with 800,000 to 1.2 million miles. Mine has 640,000 and still going. As for the Allison tranny, they're hard to beat as far as automatics go.

Somewheres about there. Case had a whole list of specs for the motor, Cummins was the only one to step and and submit a design. Diesel Power had an article about it, had to be able to take so much torque when used as a frame member, and run while laying over 45 degrees in any direction. My dad layed over his 580SM and stood on the side window while using the hoe to set it upright, and never lost oil pressure.
