I just picked up a Case 580b. Is it normal that it will only spin the rear tires in first gear? It went up on my trailer in 2nd gear and moves in all gears. Going into a pile it seems a little week but perhaps I"m just not familiar with this machine. I don"t want to try and fix a problem that I don"t have. Thanks in advance!

I have a case 580k and when i go into a pile the tires will spin in 2nd gear but I can never get a full bucket full. I usual only use first gear for loading to keep the tractor running longer.

depending on the type of ground you are on yes it may only spin them in 1st gear the type of hoe you have will make a differance also a extendahoe and large bucket adds extra weight if you have good rim pull in 2nd for loading on a trailer I would say it is OK on those models 2nd was used for loading out stock piled material and easier digging areas such as sand so as not to get so much wheel slippage, in hard digging with good traction 1st works well, one thing to remember is use your bucket rollback and lift to fill the bucket as you are pushing into material, spinning the tires is not really the best idea or needed if you can help it, also make sure you are getting full throttle as 50-100rpms on the top end really make a differance in push power with a torque convertor drive, also always let the sytem warm up a bit with the 4 speed in neutral with the shuttle lever in FWD or REV this not only will lube everthing and give faster warmup it will extend the life of the shuttle clutches many hours rather than just starting it up for the day and throwing it into FWD or REV and standing on the throttle to make it move, we sold hundreds of 580's in the 60's and 70's every year great machines
