Update Cat 3306 fuel pump

Thanks Much to Bob/Ont for his help on my pump. Cat dealer
told me the 8s82243 tool was wrong and need a different
wrench. Bob was right, Cat was wrong (as usual). Finally did a
search online for the wrench Bob/Ont rec"d and found it for $20.
Worked perfect. It is all together and working. My only
question, is I have a cold cylinder. Fuel is getting to it, and the
injector is working, but the cylinder is not hot on start up like the
other 5. Is there an adjustment on the fuel pump to increase
amount of fuel for that injector? Seems like it is not getting
enough.

Thanks Much

If it's pumping fuel you might have the metering sleeve in upside down, Take the side plate back off and check. Is it fireing at all? is it the same one as wasn't fireing before? The levers that control the sleeves have to be syncronized with special tool group.

Yes, I beleive you are right. I think the lever is not set correctly. It is the same cylinder that I had problems with before, however, at that time it had no fuel going to it because of the sheared off plunger. It is firing but not real hot. At full throttle it heats up a bit. I guess I will have to have someone with the proper tools to set the levers correctly. Also, I checked and the plunger is in the right position.

Thanks again for all your help.

Pic of plunger sheared off. All other plunger were perfect. Weird?

Thanks Tim, is the sleeve seized to the plunger? If it's seized the lever that fits into the groove will be out of sync and that will effect your timing and power. Look for them to all be in allignment.

Yes it was froze. I replaced the whole plunger and spring mechanism. i am doing manual timing and going to get it close to get it back in the barn. First round I had a cold cylinder (not enough fuel pumping out of the piston ? ), second round very hot cylinder (too much fuel pumping ? ) third round (still hotter than the other cylinders but getting close ?) Then ran out of time. Will continue tommorrow. I think I am getting the hang to how the timing works on these. Having alot of fun working on it. Kinda of a PIA draining and taking the plate off every time to adjust the cam though.

Thanks much for your input

You are very adventurous Tim and are getting things working. If you get it so you can run at idle and not feel much of a pulse in the exh you have it very close.

Thanks Bob,

It is running like a Swiss watch. I am all done for now. It was alot of fun learning how it works, and getting it working again.
