I have an HD-6, 2-71 runs great, excellent beast of a machine. however, it sat for several years with one steering clutch compartment half full of water, oil, the drain valve closed. Got it running and no brakes or steering. Got new brake linings on and put back together, so now i can turn left, but still no right turn. Steering clutches stuck, so pulled all the bolts on both sides of the clutch and tried pulling it up, ended up with a heavy nylon strap around it and got the forklift out and actually picked up the back of the dozer trying to get this out. Ive been spraying wd-40 on it twice a day and left pressure from the forklift on it and still nothing.

The service manual doesnt show anything other than pulling the bolts out and using the brake band to lift the assembly out and i cant see that i am missing anything, but....i am kinda leery of putting the torch on it because of the clutch fork and the seals and i dont wanna pound on the clutch assembly because i dont want to end up having to get a new one.

I am looking for any suggestions here, so any help would be great, i have a couple ditches and a tree line i want to clean up before i need to get beans in the ground...

Thanks

Your machine should be a HD5 with DETROIT 271 motor and make sure than you did't forget to remove all the bolts from the stering cluch and the flange each side have a lipp and you have knock on drum for make loose maybe 1/8" each side drum for pulling

Gemdozer has it right. Each side is cut so that there is a slight flange that holds the steering clutch assembly true, leaving the bolts to do nothing but basically tie everything together. Usually you'll need a prybar or something to get the pieces to seperate slightly before the steering clutch assembly will lift out, but with everything frozen/rusted up that might be a bit more of a challange than it typically would. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, i mistyped, it is an HD5, I should have taken a pic of this assembly before i posted this. The way the clutch seems to be sitting in there, it looks like just both sides are flat machined surfaces. Are the flange cuts in the center of the assembly? That would appear to be the only place it could be since i can see the machined surface on that outer ring area.

Just so i am following along then, the assemblies on either side of the clutch housing should move slightly away from the clutch? Sorry for making this sound so elementary, i just would have thought the service manual would have included a little blurb about something like that, unless under normal circumstances they would tend to slide apart much easier haha

this little beast is awesome and i am glad i picked it up though, dozers and crawlers arent my norm, but there really isnt much to one of these, lots of fun.

Thanks again for the replies.

Don"t know we"re I went wrong ??? I"m completing restoration
of my 1936 cletrac ag6 , had a bad track chain but with help of
aircraft cable I drove it into garage for wi yet project ! Spring is
here an project is near complete , replaced track although
extremly tight , ajustment very nessesary .... Upon driving inno
garage the machine ran without flaw no prob detected at all !
Now I replaced points , condenser , plugs ,wires, cap an rotor ,
checked resistance of new taylored made wires an all is good ,
gaped plugs at .25 , cleaned carb 2x over trying to figure if I
missed something an I have no ajustment in high speed jet at
all now ??? Motor pops an farts , governor seems to want to
labor motor ??? I never touched the timing but was perfect
before ...... I"m getting to the edge of insane with this matter !
Motor seemed to clean up after carb clean an fuel screens ,
perhaps starving fuel ??? On gaping plugs noticed cyl # 2,5
seem to be lean ( plugs white) others look rich ??

Jeff,

Year and model don't add up, AG-6 first
production was during WWii ,AG with 4 cyl herc
is older. I have an early production AG-6
(war production) ser# 3XO 370 .

Jeff,

With a continental it is an AG-6 ,it's the
only model that cletrac used a cont'l in, all
others had hercules except the early AD and it
had a Buda diesel.

Not positive on cap but I know firing order on block , I don't believe it would not run at all if I was off on cap???? Research reading manual makes me wonder if it could be fuel issue ??
