Cat 3306 Fuel Pump

I hope somebody here can figure this out for me. I have a Cat D5B with a 3306 precombustion (donut on the top) engine. I cannot get #2 to fire (very low pressure). I cracked the fuel line and very little fuel comes out. Has anyone seen this before?

Is there a way to change the #2 plunger/piston in the fuel pump without taking it off the machine?

Thanks Much

Yes but you need special tools. Does your pump have a big plate on the side of it? Is there much smoke in the exh at idle? What colour of smoke?

Turn off the fuel and remove the big plate, might find a broken spring. Not sure you can buy the spring only but will find out.

Bob, Thanks Much!

Is there anything to be careful of when taking off the plate. Any parts that can fall out etc.?

I think the only loose part is a plastic relief valve and spring. The pump housing is lubricated by and full of diesel fuel. What is your serial#?

Serial number is 7N2058.

A picture is attached as well. Thanks for your help.

Thanks, I think you might do well to remove the pump Tim. It would be easier to drill the broken manifold studs. To remove the pump take the TDC plug out of the flywheel housing and the 9/16"hex plug from the odd shaped housing rear of the plate on the pump. Rotate the engine untill the shank of a new 1/4" drill bit will go down the hole in the pump and drop into the slot in the camshaft. Check the hole in the flywheel is inline with the hole in the housing and a 3/8"NC bolt will thread into the flywheel. You are now timed up. Take off front cover and pull gear off tapered shaft. When installing pump amke sure bolt will go into flywheel and the #1 valves are both loose. Turn pump shaft untill drill drops into slot, mount pump and install gear.To install gear torque bolt to 100 Lb Ft. You need a special socket to take nut off of pumping element, fuel shop might be best way to go.

Bob, I just got the manifold bolts out. Do you think it is possible to work on the pump without removing. I can"t stand the thought of removing it.

That was the number stamped on the large plate. I will look for another #.

Thanks much for your assistance.

Hi Bob,

I borrowed the piston/pump removal tool (8S2244). Is it ok to remove the #2 piston on the pump directly to check for any wear, or are there steps to the removal/installation process that you would advise doing first. It looks pretty straight forward, but I am worried looks may be deceiving.

The Best

Tim, you can buy a spring if that is all you need. First take the big plate off and see what is wrong. Then you can take out the #2element.
You need to take it apart to change the spring if it is needed. Get a dish of fuel, the parts will get dirty from you handeling them, wash off and assemble the barrel and plunger under fuel to keep clean.

Here is what I found in the pump. Looks like the plunger sheared off. The spring was good. My problem is I cannot get the bonnet off the #2 pump piston. I have the 8S2244 extractor and the 8T5287 wrench, but neither of these fit over the 25mm? bonnet. Does anyone know what tool is needed for the bonnet for that pump?

Thanks Much
