JD 350 Steering

Was having a good day of some dozer work when..... I was making a right turn and the stick went back and had no resistance. If you pulled it clear back it pulled the motor down some but did not turn. Pulled the seat and everthing is moving but nothing is happening. Any idea what I just got myself into for a repair.

Thanks

if its the 350 or 350B grease may be leaking from the final drive into the steering clutch pack, lubricating the clutches so they don't work. Unbolt the square plate with 4 bolts underneath the seat & look at the bottom with a strong flashlight. If you see grease, new seals to stop the leak & new clutches are in order.

pressure plate? throwout bearing? Make sure
with a light) that those moving linkages are moving the throwout bearing. Sounds like brake is working some but clutch is not disengageing.

If it's as "2x4" suggests and you need to get it out of the field & back to the shop, then here's a trick that will at least get it back in: (1) Put about 1 oz. of Brake Fluid into the gear oil in the final drive to swell the seals, (2) Thicken the gear oil in the final drive with "Motor Honey", (3) Flush out the clutch pack with Tetrachloroethylene - if that's not available you can use either Acetone or Methyl Ethyl Keytone. Do NOT leave the solvent in the clutch pack for more than a minute or two, as it will eat up the seals. Make certain that you flush all of the solvent vapors out of the clutch pack. - This trick DOES work, I've done it to get a machine back into the shop.

Forgot to mention, this trick is NOT a fast fix! After you add the Brake Fluid you need to run the machine back & forth to mix the fluids and then let it sit overnight so the seals can swell. The add the Motor Honey to the gear oil & run it back & forth a few times to get it mixed & thicken it. Then flush with your solvent. - I did this on a CAT D-9 that was in swampy ground & we couldn't get a Low-Boy anywhere near it.

While 2x4 is correct in saying "If you see grease, new seals to stop the leak & new clutches are in order" this is not the cause of your problem. Oil & grease will often cause the clutches to slip but will not prevent them from releasing. Sounds like you have broken linkages or some type of failure with the pressure plate or throw out brg. or worse case loose housings. If you have questions or need parts, feel free to contact me.
