case 850B, what to look out for

Look at a small dozer for farm use. It would be to keep me from trying to use my 4x4 loader tractor as a bulldozer.

There is an 850B for sale locally. What are the weak points?

We had an 1150 growing up, so I am somewhat familiar with Case dozers, and know the 336BD inside and out.

Were some 4 speeds and some 2? Internet search said they were 4, owner says 2...

Are tracks/pitch the same between the older 1150, and the 850B? Sprockets are worn on the 850B, but a set of new sprockets go with it.

a 850 should be the same trans style as my 450, it has a Hi/Lo for each track, and a Hi/Lo for a main gear selection giving them 4 speeds, the 1150/1450 tractors as you know had the ability to counter rotate the tracks, 450/850 do not but have the same high/low setup as the 1150/1450 if that helps, I have never ran a 850 myself but knew people who had them and they all talked highly of them hope that helps cnt

you can use the brakes for a pivot turn, or one track in low other in high for a power to both tracks turn or one track in neutral for a gradual turn, the 1150/1450 can do the same turns with the counter rotate option

Thanks, really liked being able to spin around on yourself in the 1150. Shame the newer ones got so blessed heavy. Farms are kinda scattered over a few miles here. I figured with the 850 I could get a neighbor to haul on a heavy goose neck, or on my C70 in a pinch.

Learn to operate your new dozer correctly. do not use the brakes for turning brakes. They are not oil lubed and cannot take take the heat. Have seen the brakes shafts turned blue and break. use the trans hi low and neut. for turning

I agree completely with that statement, as I said use them for a pivot turn only, that is the way I always taght new owners to use them when we were a dealer brakes will last a lot of hrs if you only use them in a pinch, I perfer useing the hi/low turn around half way thru the turn in fwd then reverse the levers and shift to rev they turn nicely that way

Guy I worked with for a while had 1, He said they had a problem breaking oil lines inside the motor. Would loose oil pressure, must have been a simple fix, he broke 1 while working at my place and had her going again in a couple of hours.
