how do you replace the seal. Does the motor have to come out? |

if it is a 995 L you can pull the torque or tranny with out touching the engine. all 955 K & Ls have a flex coupling between the engine and TC. replacing the seal is a simple job I can scan the article from the service manual. there is a wear sleeve that can be installed on the TC input flange to take care of any wear on the seal surface

Naturally, try what Bob says first. I didn't think taking the blocks out would give enough room to slide the flange off.

If you mean the seal in the front of the torque converter just take out the coupling. Drill and use sheetmetal screws to pull it out. Make sure the shaft isn't wobbeling around on failed bearings. Can get sleeve to cover worn groove in flange. Later Bob

There doesn't appear to be a coupling just a spline from the engine direct to the tourque converter. If I took a picture could you confirm? Mike

Are you sure which you are talking about. Transmission or torque convertor? Where is the leak?

As you're taking the engine out, take note of any shims under the rear engine mounts. These shims are for locating the rear of the motor, to minimize the mis-alignment of the drive coupling. Remove the drive blocks and inspect them closely. Any cracks or dry-rot, replace them. They're pretty dear at $80 apiece, but remember, they never break when the weather is dry, warm and sunny. You have to fix it where it breaks, unless you happen to have something bigger you can pull it around with.

Yes, make sure to take note of those shims, if misaligned, those drive blocks will come apart in short order, recalling from memory, while running a 955, that just had an engine overhaul, this happened 2x, once with a line of trucks to get loaded, and that was the cause.
