Just bought a JD 440 IC. just played around on it less than a day after having it and one of the tracks cracked. Whats the best thing to do? get a small section of track or have the casting welded back up?
 
The track links are a high strength material.
Use a 11018 or 6010 5P+ Lincoln rod for welding.
For a track shoe, any mild steel rod will work.
 
I don't know what exactly you broke. If it's a track chain-link - it probably broke because it's worn too thin and way past it's original hardened exterior. In that case, welding is a waste of time if you really want to use the machine for any work.
 
The 6010 5P+ is the Lincoln designation for their 11060 rod which is the same strength as the 11018 but is not a low hydrgen rod. It is readily available and quite a popular rod around here. It is easy to use and good for out of position welding with a light slag cover.
 
I'm VERY familiar with 5P+. It is Lincoln's improved 6010. Came out in the late 80's as a smoother running 5P which was the industry standard for decades. There is no such thing as 11010. The highest XX10 rod is a 9010 but most XX10 rods over 6010 are used almost exclusively for downhand pipeline welding. An XX10 would not be the rod to use to weld up anything on an undercarriage.

in a welding supply store with the Lincoln welding consumables book right in front of me. The 6010 IS the rod classification!!! 60,000 psi tensile, all position with a cellulose coating. AWS classification E6010. I've also been a licensed interprovincial red seal welder for close to 30 years. I think you should have your facts straight before you try to correct anyone. LoL
 
Well get yourself a 6010 rod and a 6010 5P+ rod and try to cut each on with some cutting pliers. You will find the 5P+ rod is much harder!! A normal 6010 rod and a 6010 5P+ rod are not the same!!
 
It's still a 6010 class rod. You don't measure the strength of a welding rod but how hard it is to cut with side cutters, otherwise you might as weld everything with hard facing rod.
