I need to install new break bands on my JD 450B. I have it broken down where I can see inside the housing where the old ones are.Now the question--can someone tell what I need to next. I was told all I had to do was worm the old ones off and the new ones on. Well, I can't see how to work the bottom. My book shows a spring on the bottom and I don't see how to get to it. Maybe I'm missing something. Thanks |

Its been a few years but as I recall it can be done from the top, if you take out upper shaft of final drive brake drum and bands can be lifted out. I have the book in the shop if you need research done. Luck

Nah.... It's not that bad.. The bands will come out without a lot of hub-bub..Those bands are 2 piece and can be removed by only taking the top linkages out.. Once all is disconnected , roll the bands so the bottom spring can be released. then roll the bands out.. Now , if it were a C series....That's something else.. Then you will have to remove finals, as they are one piece bands..When going back together, neverseize all the linkages so they won't freeze up over time..

I’m not a mechanic, just trying to learn at an older age. I see what my book says but does not work for novices. I don’t know what “disconnect the upper linkage” is, sorry. I’ve worked on this today, loosen the bolts, one each side, that keeps the break band tight. The bands are loose now. What am I to do next?

You will need to remove the final drives to gain accses to brake band assembly. which includes breaking the track removing the final drives and replacing any needed componants. You cannot do this through the inspection cover on top.

In regard to the "modern" stuff, that only applies to 1010s, 350s and 2010s. All 450 series with dry clutches come out the top without removing the final drives.

Bad as I thought, I could see no other way. Thanks for telling me what I already had in my mind, all I need out of this machine is about 20 hours of work, cheaper to hire it done.
