Going to take a look at a late model td9b. Any special problems common to this machine that you would share with me? Thanks

Td9B s all ran the ih D282 engine if it is diesel
engine. Those engine almost always have a cracked head or blown head gasket. When you start it watch for white smoke that will clear up as the engine warms up . You may be the lucky one but most folks that buy a 30 + year old dozer are just throwing money out the window. The only other common failure was the reverser did not last to good . they also tend to have a little more engine than the finals stand if you really load it. Don't let me keep you from it but they are better dozers out there unless it is very (like scrap) cheap.

My dad bought one of those tractors new from Rish Equipment in Cleveland, in '69 I believe. That thing did the work of a D6 for a long time. You didn't mention transmission option, ours was powershift with manual hi-lo range. One in-frame overhaul, one out-of-frame, no other trouble. Dad offed it when the rails got stretched so far that the tracks fell off about once a week. He traded it on a D6C 10K, when they were unloading it the trans gave up. It had about 9500 hrs. on it.

I like my TD6, it has a 282. Make sure that both steering clutches release when you drive it. They should both pull with about the same resistance on the levers. Then find a big rock or tree and push and make sure both track spring and the clutches don’t slip. Then of course check the undercarriage. Lots of specs on that machine on crawler heaven. Also look at the king of obsoletes website. He has lots of TD9’s and tips on things to look for on them. And yes they do crack heads if they are shut down without being cooled off and idled down after working hard.
