I'm thinking about buying this dozer but I don't know anything about this machines and I don't want to get in over my head. My first concern is that I haven't heard it run there it turns over but its slow and slugish, there is only one battery in the box, is the starting system 24v? How can I tell, Thanks

thanks, were is the id plate on the motor? if you don't mind me asking what else should i look for...

I am concern that if you do not have enough mechanical acumen to not know the difference between a 2 stroke Detroit diesel and the 4 stroke Allis engine that you may be in away over your head in trying to assess the condition of an old crawler tractor. There are so many components other than the engine that can be a major money pit on an old crawler that you would be foolish not take an experience crawler mechanic with you to check it over.

Thanks for the input and I know nothing about this old machines, however I do all the maintenance and repair on my equipment, tractors, baler, cutters, etc, but I have never messed with a dozer. seems like every piece of equipment that I bought was in similar shape, setting on a field somewhere rotting and I somehow brought it back to life. And I plan on taking a mechanic along next time I go out to look at the hd7

My brother has a 1945 HD7 with a dozer that he also used for farm work. Good tractor, but the final drive gears are the weak point in the system. Brother had to replace one drive gear; finally found a good used one in a salvage yard a few states away.

The HD7 should have two large batteries to turn that engine over for starting. The engine exhaust is definitely not clean, so it is nasty to use inside a pole barn for dozing out the winter accumulation of manure.
