CAT D2 Purchase

Help! Considering purchasing a CAT D2, I have two available to me - the first is a fully RESTORED 1951 Serial # 5U9xxx with a rope start pony motor, manual 6-way blade (Hyd. lift), & 90%+ undercarriage, but it's nearly 1800 miles away. The other machine looks like it just came in from plowing the back 40 acres, undercarriage looks to be about 50%, blade is a manual 8-way (Hyd. lift), engine is factory direct start, Serial # 5U16xxx , new batteries, Hyd. to the rear, BUT photo shows a bad oil leak on the rear of the engine (back half of engine is black with oil), & this machine is less than 300 miles away and $500. cheaper. Also, unknown how much is left of the clutches & brakes.

Whatever I purchase is going to be used on a remote mountain-top mining claim. I'm very strongly leaning towards the restored dozer even though shipping charges are going to be pricey.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks !

You might want to consider looking for something a little newer, a little closer to you. I had one years ago. Put more in parts into it than I paid for it.

There is nothing wrong with a D2. One of my favorite tractors. Just check them out real good. Try to get one that does not need fixing and it will last you the rest of your life. Be sure you understand how to check undercarriage or find someone who can. Brakes and clutches don"t wear out. Brakes get glazed, cluches get stuck.

As mentioned in my original post: Tractor #1 - 90%+ undercarriage, the machine is fully restored - ie: new clutches & new brakes, etc. . Tractor # 2 - clutches & brakes unknown, undercarriage about 50%, engine has serious oil leak.

I need something small like a D2 that I can pull behind my 3/4 ton pickup, and yet is big enough to do a good days work. Anything larger would require also purchasing a tractor-trailer rig with a low-boy trailer - I'm trying to keep costs to a minimum.

Ive got two of them, love em.Both pony start but ponys are elect start.I would gather up wifey and a good two or three axel trailer and go on a several nite trip. Hoss
