Question: What are the differences between a CAT D2 & a CAT D4 ? I've looked at photos of both on the web, & except for some slight cosmetic differences such as covers on the drive sprockets, etc. ; I can see no real difference, - they look almost identical.

Rick, thanks for your response. In side-by-side
photos they appear to be about the same size; as for
weight, I know that the D2 with blade weighs approx.
7500 Lbs. & a D3 about 15000 Lbs. ... a D4 , I
haven't a clue; as to Horse Power, a D2 is about
38HP . Do you know the HP of the D4 ?

the CHL equipment guide I have shows a D4 6U 1947-1959 with a D315 engine rated @ 63hp and weight of 11925lbs with no attachments hope this helps you thanks for the info on my post below cnt tom

@ Case Nutty : Thank You for your reply. I was curious because in the photos both machines looked almost identical.

If you are talking D4's in the same era of D2's which ended mid to late 50's, they do look similar and the operators station is a little confining on both, each has the horizontally opposed 2 cylinder starting engine on the back of the diesel engine.

The D4 could be had with longer track frames, 5 roller instead of 4. Longer provides more balance if there is a dozer on it. In those years they are similar in appearance.

here are the reports on them from the Nebraska tests just to give you a little lore info if you like cnt

According to tractor data the D2 made from 1938 to 1957 was between 7420 and 8536 LBS. Rated at 32 HP drawbar, 32.9 PTO and 41.9 Belt HP.

The D4 also made from 1938 to 1957 was between 9970 and 10250 LBS. Rated at 50.18 drawbar and 58.88 Belt HP.

Not these weight figures are for the AG models without a blade.

So the D4 was a tad bigger. I've been around both but not at the same time.

the D4 was larger,it had final drives and a dead axle. the D2 had a live axle bolted to the ring gear and weird steering clutches & Brakes. they were entirely different tractors

To Everyone that responded to my question: A very big T H A N K Y O U for all of your help. As I stated earlier, in the photos they looked almost identical & I was curious as to what the actual differences were. Again, a big T H A N K Y O U to all. < "Doc" >
