determining year with id tag missing

Is it possible to determine the year of a tractor if the serial tag is missing? Is the serial number stamped anyplace else?

A lot depends on what model tractor you have. Just an example there is thrift store in town that ha a Ford mutt tractor for sale. It has a late model 8N engine and the rear axle houses states a date code of 1946 which is a 2N. Many tractors have some sort of date code on them so one can narrow down the year that way

If your S has the original engine there will be a serial number stamped into the lip of the block where it bolts up to the transmission housing right behind the air cleaner assembly. Some other clues are does it have an Eagle Hitch, where is the clutch handle (right or left), does it have live PTO, etc. The answer to these questions can help you determine if it is a late or early model. Other people will chime in with more clues. Don

Down where the draw bar attaches to the underside of the tractor there should be a oval with the date of manufacture.
