other vac problem

I got my VAC in november. It is a 51 with heavy oil only in the gearbox/rearend. I checked it when i bought it and I am sure it was right at full. The gear oil is so clean and green I am sure the guy must have changed it right before he sold it to me. Now when i check it, it is 1" above the notch on the stick. I must have read it wrong. I dont think 30 degree temp change would account for that much of a rise, or could it? I don't think hydraulic oil from that chamber is migrating to the rear end as I have not had to add any there either.
Anyway, does it hurt to overfill? And where is the oil line in the tranny? The reason I ask is I also have an axle seal leaking. If the rear is overfull would it push it out the axle? Only the right one is leaking. Finally, I saw on a facebook post where a guy is putting 2 seals on because the new ones are thinner? Is he right on that?

Did it sit out in the rain? Water got into my VAC had no boot on the shifter and the rain water wicked in. Crack the drain plug and see if any water comes out.

Slowly start to remove the drain plug. Do so just till it starts to drip, do this after it has sat a few days. If it drips water then you know why it shows over full. Common to happen in tractor even if they have not sat out side but more likely if they have.

Will try draining to see if water comes out. I have a new boot on the shifter. Not sure where else water could get in but it is worth a try.

Yes, the water came running out! I should have had a bucket to measure it. It is now exactly at the full mark as I remembered it to be last year. It was missing the shift boot when I got it, but i ordered it right away and put it on. I am amazed that much water could get in especially since we are in a drought! I did work on the seat this summer. I did not leave the bolts out at any time during a rain. The cover on the tranny is tight. Should i take the seat bolts out and put an o-ring or sealant around them?

I think I will wait until I use the tractor again and see if the seal on the axle still leaks. I am wondering if it was leaking because the water is thinner and it brought a little bit of the oil with it.

It's leaking because it was overfull. Time will tell if you need to replace the seal or not now that the level is right. Condensation can cause this as well as liquid running in. If you work the machine hard enough to get it hot the water will boil off again.

Therein lies the problem. I love to use it, but it hardly ever works hard and not very often. It will be inside for the winter while I paint it. I
think best practice for me is to drain the water off twice a year. The leak started at the time I noticed the overfill so I think you are right about
it being ok now. Thanks all for the good info.

Forgot to mention that you might want to check the breather filter, if a DC has one, anyway check whatever it has for a breather. If it's clogged it can cause pressure buildup and blow seals.

I seem to remember that VAC axle housings are oil flooded at the full mark on the dipstick like the 300 GP tractors?
