Engine heads from 1160 combine.

I've been having problems getting the engine on my 1160 combine to run right. I eliminated most everything else as the problem so I pulled the heads yesterday. This is what I found. I thought it sounded like one cylinder on each side was leaking, and that is what I found. The second cylinder from the left on the top head was nearly full of oily gunk. That cylinder hadn't fired well in a long time. There are some bad valves in both heads. Hopefully neither head is cracked and a valve job and gaskets takes care of my problem.

Probably got hot at one time and cracked the heads. Not uncommon if the previous operator didn't keep a eye on the radiator screen or temp gauge. The industrial heads had stellite valves, IRC.

Jon,Since the heads are off I would have a machine shop rebuild them and check for cracks. The parts book for the 1060 that I sent to you some years back would have all the oem numbers for every thing you need.If I remember right there was 2 different 318 engines for the 1160. Guessing Lh318 and Lf318 If there is no tag on your engine then the parts book will help you figure it out for sure.Good luck and let us know how you come out.

They are at the rebuilders now. He will cook them out and test for cracks before we decide what to do with them.

Look at the intake port on the gunked cylinder in the first photo... was probably sucking in oil from a leaking intake gasket, or the intake may even have a crack allowing oily crankcase vapor to enter the "runner" to that cylinder.

Pry the 4 "drive screws" out holding the steel tray to the bottom of the intake, have the intake boiled out, and CLOSELY examine it for cracks.
