Radiator fan install

1974 Case 970, diesel 401, replaced water pump with out
removing radiator.
Can?t get fan and housing aligned to install 4 bolts into
pump rotor. Tight!! Am trying punches in holes.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Put studs in hub. I suggest Loktite so they stay there. Then you hang the fan on the studs and put the nuts on with lockwashers. Only requires three hands in a spot big enough for one, instead of needing six in there.

Understood. Has 4 hex bolts with lockers that go through
holes on fan, then hub over pump, then seat into threaded
holes in rotor on pump. What do ya think? Thanks.

I would say I have changed at least two hundred water pumps, never once have I ever seen one come loose I put on or even one ever loose, using locktite will make the next change a horrible job,, but you do what you like its yours to deal with , I have had to use a stud a couple times but 99% of the time I use nothing,, but I have done a few and know a few tricks I guess lol

First check to make sure there are threads in the hub on the waterpump, yes I got a replacement pump once that the hub missed the threading process. If there is good, then forget the fan for a bit and just slip the fan spacer or pulley up there and you should be able to easily start the bolts. By doing that it would only confirm that the threaded holes in the pump hub are in the correct spot and I bet they are. Make sure the pulley, spacer and fan are all free of rust and dirt and you should have little problem getting all to line up, Rod.

uess I didn't make myself clear. Use loktite where the studs go into the hub, and only there, so next time the fan comes off they stay in the hub. Then only a split-lockwasher on the nuts. Works a treat on automotive applications where things get really tight.

That still makes it a miserable job next time because the studs need to come out #1 to go into the
new pump, and #2 to get room to get the fan hub extension out. No loktite!

I screw one stud into the hub to line up the fan, pulley, and spacer if one is used. After I put in a couple bolts I remove the stud and finish putting the bolts in.
