Ordering parts for the UK

If you've bought from [color=blue:0c0a396d7f]davidbrownparts.com[/color:0c0a396d7f] or others how'd it go? I'm looking at seals for a CAV cold start assist, DBP seems to be the only place to get them. They are not in any reseal kit I have inquired into.

You mean seals for this thing in the photo? My pump only had one o-ring (at red arrow) and that o-ring is included in the gasket / reseal kit. There was a steel washer at the blue arrow. I did not see any other sealing devices in there. Didn't see any steel ball either. Please post back if you find out what is supposed to be in there. I will look in the literature that I have.

Well. That is interesting! No one around here knows anything about the cold start. That includes the pump people I have contacted. After going to the David Brown Club's forum a couple folks there have been kind enough to help.

First, I have NOT taken mine apart as I was cautioned that the seals are not available in the U.S. and are found from only one source in the U.K. I'm being told the seal kits for the CAV pump available to the U.K. do not have the CS seals. Not having parts in hand or available, I chickened out on removing mine because this tractor has it in for me, no matter how simple the repair looks it always gets worse after the first screw is turned.

The ball is not captive so, and I'm guessing here, it may fall out after removing the cold start. It was recommended to remove the CS via the larger of the two nuts on the CS screw then disassemble it in a vise (mine is stuck and won't turn even with vice-grips). Davidbrownparts.com shows three bits to the CS seal kit; two simple O-rings and a formed seal that looks very much like a carburetor plunger style accelerator pump, only without the hole. No clue where it goes...

I was cautioned to look out for the ball bearing during disassembly. It is the component that effects the timing change via pressure from the screw. I had envisioned a tapered end screw working as a wedge to change the timing but a ball is used.

I can pass along any questions if you'd like.

Mine is on a AD3/55 in an 885, I see your pump is green. I wonder if there is more than one version of the CS hence the differences of yours versus (what's supposed to be in) mine.

I was told David Brown was the only one to use the cold start in the CAV's as the reason I was having so much trouble getting info and an exploded view drawing.

Ordered a fuel lift pump from England for a 2715e ford it was cheaper
buy half what the local fiat New Holland dealer wanted for the pump
exchange rate and shipping included and probably got to my door
just as fast if not faster and I still would have had to pay reight to New
Holland .

Good to know. My options here being zero I emailed DBparts this morning.

My CAV pump on my AC5040 had that cold start assist part on it. I rebuilt it a year ago because that piece was leaking like crazy. A user on this site that goes by the
username dieseltech sent me seal that was not in the kit for that part to fix the leak.

hope that helps.

I'll see I can PM him, Thanks.

Scott, here is a pdf that has the parts diagram for the cold start device on the CAV pump. The diagram of interest is on the second page, at the bottom, in the middle.

The local diesel injection shop here in town sells that special rubber washer. The o-rings are common, but you will need the o-ring's size in order to purchase them. I can measure the ones they gave me if you need. They told me that special rubber washer "costs $20", but then they proceeded to give me one for free, so I'm not sure if I believe them

Thanks for the link Joe. As to the O-rings, after a weekend of running the tractor (finally!!) I am comfortable saying the CS is turned CCW so will leave it for now. Found it doesn't have but very meager brakes and that is only on one side. It is left to field work only until harvest time.
