Steering on LA Case

I have a lot of free travel on my steering wheel. I removed the pitman arm, turned it 180 degrees and reduced a lot of the play. One manual that I have is telling me to pull steering wheel and pull top of column off and remove shims. Are any of these shims available if I can't get it adjusted right?

Watch your steering wheel shaft as you turn the wheel right and left. If it moves up and down adjusting the shims will fix that. As for shims, cut them out of beer cans if you need more.

I have never had to add shims, only needed to remove. However, at the bottom of the steering shaft are Timkin Bearing cups & cones, 2 each. I have seen where they were bad. Another adjustment is the worm gear itself which is done with an adjustment screw, located under the fuel tank, right side. Look for a large adjusting screw with a large lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and adjust the large setscrew to take any play out, after checking for the shaft end play as DKASE describes.
