Ok Saturday I worked the brakes over on my Racine diesel 400. New seals the hole 9 yards. After I finished I decided to take it down the road for a short drive. The neighbor was out so I stopped, shut the tractor off to talk. Went to start it after about 10 minutes an nothing. The starter just made a thump. We tried to pull start it and it just slid the tires. Got it back to the shop I couldn't get the engine to turn over with a bar on the front pulley. I pulled the starter rolled the engine backwards just a bit an checked the starter. Put it back together and it worked just fine. Starts, runs , moves. I have started it 30 times since this happened. Does anyone have a clue why the engine "locked up"? It runs fine now. No knocking or other weird noises.

Your engine didn't lock up, the starter did. A worn Bendix, and or ring gear is the problem. You can be sure that it will never happen again around the shop, only when you are the farthest from home, then it will happen again.

Since it hasn't happened again it is most likely due to ring gear tooth wear. The major wear on a ring gear occurs just on a few teeth that the starter gear initially engages to turn the engine. The wear is repeating as the engine stops when coming up on a compression stroke so the major wear is confined to small areas on the ring gear circumference.
