Generator light

Hello men, today while mowing the generator might came on on my 831. I am not an expert on the old generators and external regulators. I know the batteries and cables are very good and it appears the wires are good and intact. I replaced the regulator not too long ago and polarized it. I am confused on the voltage checks should perform at the regulator wires. If someone could help me out here i sure would appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Nick

Generator light on means it's not charging

If it is a Delco generator, ground the Field post of the generator. If it now charges you have a bad regulator side of voltage regulator.

If it still doesn't charge, leave the field grounded and jumper from Armature to BAT on regulator. If it now charges you have a bad cut out side of the regulator. If still no charge suspect a generator problem.

The quality of today's new regulators seems to be quite low.

If it were mine, unless I wanted to keep it original I would change it to an internally regulated alternator.

Also, pull the brush cover on the generator and make sure a brush is not hung up. Debris and deteriorating brushes (they handle the current) often lead to this simple mechanical fix

Below are two links to official IH electrical system manuals that thoroughly cover how these "ancient" systems work and how to troubleshoot and repair them.

They are not "clickable", you will have to copy and paste the links into your browser.
