Why do J.I. Case 30 and 70 Series tractors light switches not turn on the dash lamps when in the first position?
Thanks!

Have no idea why they made them to work that way. You could move a wire on your switch to get them to come on the first click if you want. On the 70 series switch you would need to move a wire in the plug in, Rod.

Not sure either but I have one 970 that would pop the breaker every once and while raking,, I found if I did not turn on the dash lights it never pops I must have a wire on a gauge light rubbed through and grounding at times so what I am saying is I am glad they have it that way for this lol

Mine would get pretty warm, then I upgraded to led's now the switch is nice and cool, I did have to replace it before I bought the lights and it was $100.00 Canadian from Case.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah it seems the lighting circuit is right on the edge of the capacity of the switch and breaker. Our 970, when still fairly new and all in proper order, the lights would just quit out of the blue. Switch would get hot. Breaker would trip. Worse time was on the road. Stil always perplexed me as to why no dash lights in position 1. Fortunate for Nutty though it sounds. If only it was easier working under that darn 70 series dash. Makes my neck hurt thinking about it.

I replaced the switch in my 970 3 times in 5 years. Wired the rear lights to a toggle switch 20 years ago, and have not worked on it since.

Most new pickups and cars use relays to provide power to lights. The light switch triggers the relay that then provides the power. In the eighties Ford and others had problems with light switches made to weak to carry trailer lights. I added a relay on my ford bronco to get rid of switch problems.

20 years ago I had a Subaru Brat (fun little car to drive but not long-lasting). All the power for 4 headlights ran through the dimmer built into the turn signal switch, and I wanted brighter headlights anyway. Put in relays for both high and low beam, and a pair of halogen high-beam bulbs. Rest of the car wore out but the headlights still worked very well.
